My adventure through being a nanny

Second Honeymoon

Everything is all set. Preparations have been completed, clothes are already packed, and the itinerary has been planned. Jordan and I will be going on a week-end vacation in the Bahamas. I can see it clearly now, the cruise ship, the exotic food, and that romantic moonlight dinner in the ship. I can’t be more excited than ever.

Finally, the day I’ve been waiting for has arrived. We’re here at the pier, boarding the Luxury Line Kathrina. What a majestic cruise ship! No wonder it’s called the pearl of the Atlantic. It literally is one shimmering pearl in the blue ocean. Everything is just so lovely. The crew has been hospitable ever since we first stepped foot on the ship. The food has been great! The view of the ocean is so lovely. What makes it more romantic is the fact that I am sharing this memorable day with my husband, Jordan.

Jordan’s the only family I have. Since we have no kids, and that our parents both passed away already, we just have each other. I’ve known Jordan for quite a long time, and have been married with him for over 30 years now. Never has a day been dull with him around, and that I am rediscovering today in this cruise ship to the Bahamas.

We can call this our second honeymoon. Well, actually our first. When we got married 34 years ago, we didn’t have the money to go on a honeymoon. There was no time, no money, just our ragtag clothes, and our rings. But, hey, that was before, and now, we can enjoy the cruise together. We’re like a newly wed couple, enjoying the freedom, enjoying the life. Why shouldn’t we? I mean, we are married, you know. This will definitely be on of those trips that will surely be remembered, even as we grow older.

My 2 Most Needed Posesions

There are just simply two gadgets I can never live without. These are my alarm clock, and my cellular phone. I can’t imagine my life getting easier without these two wonderful gifts of technology.

My alarm clock has been with me since the late 1990’s. The alarm clock gives off a low tone, yet as the sound is incessant, it forces you to stand up and press the snooze button of the alarm. That’s what I really love about this alarm clock. It makes you wake up when you need to, and for the 10 or so years it served me, it hasn’t failed yet. I can’t imagine waking up without my trusted alarm clock. If I did, I guess, hey, I have to buy a new one then.

My cellular phone has never been the classy, or the technologically advanced models I always see paraded by teenagers from across the street. Yes, I can say my phone is quite the model in its class, but I never get to fully use its imbedded features. I use my cell as many people do – for communication. I have just replaced my old monochrome phone with this colored phone last year. I usually use the phone to reach Jordan whenever he’s late from work, or if something’s up. I just recently learned how to use the SMS feature of my phone, and the “text” capability of my phone.

I knew that when cellular phones were first introduced to the market, I should be getting one of those! Now, I can’t leave the house without my cellular phone. I guess, I’ve been attached with these things already.

Trouble in the Kitchen

Having no children at all means having a clean kitchen when you’re making dinner. Or does it? Well, you can have a debate with my husband, and be able to cite 10 or so reasons why the statement above is just not absolutely correct at all times. Sometimes, my husband tells me (albeit jokingly), that it’s a blessing in disguise we didn’t have any kids, because I alone can keep him up all day cleaning the mess, whenever I try to stir up a less-than-restaurant quality meal.

Seriously speaking though, there’s always going to be trouble brewing in the kitchen, or let me say, cooking in the kitchen, whenever I’m around and about. Don’t get me wrong folks, I do love to cook, and my husband says he loves my cooking (not that he can complain), but what I’m not really fond of, is the cleaning up after the preparations.

There was one time when I thought I couldn’t really get through with this predicament I was in. You see, it was New Year’s Eve, and I was cooking Jordan’s favorite dish – Beef casserole. Of course, I also made broiled chicken. Usually, we feel the aftermath of my cooking after dinner, but that New Year’s Eve dinner was different.

It all started with the Beef Casserole, or what was left of it. I was putting the dish in a bowl to serve in the dinner table, when my fingers touched the hot pan. Boy was it hot! In turn, I spilled the beef dish all over the floor. Being the one gifted with better reflexes, Jordan picked up what was left of the dish, and I was there to clean up the traces of spilled food. We just had a good laugh, and tried to forget about the dish, since there was still chicken and champagne.

Everything went smoothly, until it was time to open the champagne bottle to toast for the New Year. Jordan opened the bottle, but did not realize that pressure has built up inside. Hence, when he opened the bottle, champagne trickled all over! That definitely is one New Year’s Eve dinner we will never, ever forget.

Holiday Conclusions

Streets are getting busier, people walking the alleys fewer. Ahh, the signs that the holidays are almost over looms before me once again. The end of the holidays means the end of my week-long break and the start of my work again. More over, the end of the holidays is also the start of a new life, filled with more vigor, with more passion, and more drive to work, and live each day.

Every time the holidays are about to end, I always remember that first Holiday Break Jordan and I spent together. It was our first married year together. It was hard, yes, but it was the time that we tested ourselves, the time we knew we were never going to give up on each other.

I wasn’t the self-proclaimed super nanny at that time yet. Aside from my career as a nanny, I was taking on odd jobs, just to get us by. Jordan was doing his fair share of the work as well. We took on every available job offered to us. We knew marriage and starting a family was never easy, but we didn’t think it was that hard.

One Christmas evening, as Jordan and I are about to sleep after an exhausting day at work (yes, we had to work on Christmas Day), I slowly wept and cried on Jordan’s shoulders. He asked me why, and I told him that I wanted to give up, that I couldn’t live like this any longer.

There, I knew that I didn’t make a mistake when I exchanged vows to Jordan. He hugged me, and just whispered to me ‘We’ll get through this. We’ll work this out. As long as I live, I promise you, I will never ever let you, nor any of our children, grow hungry. That is a promise.’

Those words I kept in my heart. And as the holidays are about to end, I know that my dear Jordan has kept his promise to me.

Christmas Prep

The breeze of the wind outside tells you clearly. It’s here. It’s finally here. Genna feels it, she knows it. Oh, the children are frolicking outside and people hurrying about. It’s Christmas time once again. Am I dreaming? Please wake me up if I am! It’s just four freaking days before Christmas and I have not started preparations!

Enough daydreaming, Genna! It’s a Sunday morning, no work, Jordan’s here. Perfect! You can do all your Christmas preparations today! Oh, what am I thinking, I can’t finish everything up for today! Well, at least, I can start some of my preparations today, and finish up before Christmas!

Did I just talk to myself? Please, am I going crazy already? Oh please no, I still have a lot of shopping and cooking and preparing to do! I better get ready for the mall, then.

Jordan went with Genna to the mall. To keep Jordan’s gift a secret until Christmas, she asked Jordan to go take a look around by himself, as she goes about her own Christmas shopping.

Genna didn’t notice that the only thing she needed to buy for this Christmas were the gifts, until Jordan told her. Everything has already been prepared by her loving husband.

Gifts! Hmmm, what should I be giving my wonderful Jordan? Will it be a new watch? Or that set of tools he’s been eyeing at since last July? What about the Steven’s kids? Will I get Christina a new dress, or Jonathan that model plane he said he wanted for this Christmas?

Genna decided to keep things simple, and ought to give gifts that the people really needed. He bought Jordan the power tools set her husband always wanted. As for Christina, Genna gave her a book on fairy tales, wizardry and magic. Genna thought of giving Jonathan the model plane, but decided to buying him an art set.

My Christmas Wish List

I’ve always wanted that rubber shoe for Christmas. Jordan and I have already made our wish lists, and that sure is my number one. Ever since I set my eyes on that shoe last September, I knew, and I felt, that that shoe will be mine.

It’s a simple mid-cut rubber shoe, with a color line of powder blue and white. It’s a rubber shoe designed for running, and trekking, which I do believe will work best for me, too. Running and chasing children is much similar to running. Climbing up the mountains of toys, and pile of clothes the children messed up is much like trekking, too. I want that shoe, I need that shoe. I will get that shoe for Christmas.

I never had such affinity for an object I have no ownership yet. This is the first time that I really wanted something so badly. I tried out fitting the shoe last week, and I felt like I was Cinderella fitting the glass slipper. I saw Jordan, his eyes hiding under his cheeks, brightly smiling at me. ‘You really want that do you, honey?’ He asked. I couldn’t help but say yes, and gave him a nod, much like a child who wants candy so bad.

Whenever we’re buying groceries, or just plain window shopping, I’d always ask Jordan to walk with me to the shoe salon, so I can take a look at the shoe. Week in, week out, it sits there, waiting for me to buy the pair.

Last week, though, when I asked Jordan to accompany me to the shoe store, I felt something wrong. I did not see the pair of shoes I’ve been eyeing for almost two months already. Someone has robbed me of my hope this Christmas.

Being the nosy woman I’ve always been, I asked one of the sales persons there. Someone has bought the pair already, and had it wrapped in a Christmas wrapper. Hmmm, I get the idea. I’m not really hoping, but I believe I know who bought that pair. And I have thirty days left to find out.

My Hubby’s Birthday

It’s October 11th, midnight. I am still at a loss on what to do for my husband’s birthday tomorrow. He’s sleeping soundly in the bed. Watching him, I realize everything that we have gone through. The years we have spent together, every problem we’ve faced, everything. I see the lines and wrinkles in his face, and I see in them the times we’ve argued over a bunch of things, and the times we laughed on them, too. Jordan, you really are quite the man that got my heart. And now, you’re turning 56.

Time sure does fly by fast. I remember when I prepared your 35th birthday. It was in this same house, and on that same table. There was your favorite Beef Casserole, and the ice cold beer for you and your buddies. Who could forget the Pasta Mr. Stevens brought in.

I wonder what I’d be doing next. I wonder what that big surprise will be for your 56th birthday. Will it be something new, perhaps? Or will we simply remake your previous celebrations? Or will we just go out and have a quiet, little dinner in a fancy restaurant somewhere, like old people should?

Aha, you told me once that you never had any celebrations for your birthday when you were a child. That gives me an idea, Jordan. I’ll give you one heck of a party you’ll never forget! I’ll be waking up early this morning, just in time to get you the party needs we’ll need.

I’ll put in balloons, lots of balloons. I can have a cake ordered this morning, just in time for the afternoon party. Unfortunately, I won’t be able to get in clowns, but next door neighbor Ernie is a good magician, I’ll talk to him later as well. I’ve already pre-reserved food accommodations for your birthday, I’ll just be confirming it. Hmm, I guess we’re all set. My, oh my, I am so excited! Oh, let’s not forget the piñata!

Over the last few months It has come to my attention that many devout Crock Pot owners are loath to let go of their beloved kitchen slow cooking appliance when it starts to show its age: when wear and tear from service in the kitchen starts to really hamper your crock Pot's performance. Other times it is something sudden and definite that ends your slow cooker's usefulness in the kitchen: an accidental drop can leave your crock pot lid or liner damaged beyond repair. The other thing to come to my attention is.. (Read More)

In July of 2009, I was musing over how the timely installation of a stairs lift chair in the home could mean that the upstairs of one’s home would not have to be out of reach any longer. For obvious reasons that potential for accesibility would be abig deal for many facing increasing restrictions upon their personal mobility. Back then I had seen some (at that time) recent dealings with stair chair lifts being installed in people’s homes and it had brought to mind my first exposure to such mobility aids when I was a.. Do you want to get a good tan? I know that I enjoy my life more when I look in the mirror and I see something other than a ghost white face. When I use tanning beds for even the smallest possible amount, the skin gets better and isn't as dry any more. For this I usually get a pass for the tanning salon which I can use as much as I want.. The release of the Iron Man film in 2008 marked the beginning of Marvel Entertainment's new approach to managing the film rights to its comicbook properties; Iron Man was the first motion picture that Marvel went ahead and produced itself instead of effortlessly licensing out a character property to one more studio in exchange for a licensing fee upfront.  This change in direction meant that Marvel would be abandoning its usual guaranteed upfront money for the chance to rake in a much larger potential profit after release.  Sure enough..
